How to Properly Swing A Golf Club: A Three Level Tutorial

3 minute read

In today's video we will discuss a simple, three-level process that can help you build a solid golf swing from scratch, or improve a struggling golf swing. This is for anyone who can't consistently break 80.

Building Your Golf Swing: Level One

The first level of our golf swing guide focuses on the takeaway, a crucial part of your golf swing. This stage involves using the torso to move the club back from the address position, with minimal off-ball movement or rotation. This motion should bring the club to a point where it's parallel to the ground, the left arm under the right, and your shoulders creating a slight tilt.

What we aim for here is a square club face. To achieve this, ensure the club head is in line with your hands, matching the angle of your spine. Since golf is a game played from an angle, remember that the club and your shoulders will be tilted at an angle corresponding to your forward-leaning posture.

To practice this, try a simple drill. Position the ball in front of you, align your arms parallel to your spine, swing back and forth. Pay attention to the way your shoulders work around your spine. At the end of this stage, your hips, knees, and torso should be aligned towards your target. Consistently practice this level one swing, aiming to hit the ground at the same spot every time for comfort and confidence.

Enhancing Your Golf Swing: Level Two

Level two builds upon the foundations of level one, adding more rotation to the swing. In this stage, we introduce an alignment rod to guide the rotation of your body. The goal here is to initiate the movement with the torso, pulling the lower body around with it, which in turn creates space between your trail hip and the alignment rod. While doing this, ensure your head remains fairly centered.

Now comes the moment to add some hinge to your swing. Starting with the takeaway, add a hinge and turn, repeating the motion until you form a letter 'L' with your club on the backswing. This level two swing is what we refer to as the L2L swing. The focus remains on consistently hitting the ground at the same spot.

Perfecting Your Golf Swing: Level Three

Level three completes the swing with a full follow-through, adding more power and ensuring full body balance. It's okay to take the club slightly further back on the backswing. However, most skilled golfers stick around the L or slightly longer than that.

The focus of this level is a balanced finish where you can almost tap your back foot. It's crucial to ensure the weight is favoring the lead foot at the start, and during the takeaway, it should still favor your front foot. As we go into our larger swing here, the weight now slightly favors the trail foot. The most crucial piece is hitting the ground in the same spot every time.

The Takeaway

The essence of learning how to properly swing a golf club lies in building up your swing gradually, from the level one takeaway to the level three complete follow-through. Remember, perfect practice makes perfect. Always aim to hit the ground in the same spot with every swing, and don't forget to maintain a balanced body posture.
